Robots in the yineyards

Wednesday, December 4, 2024

Vineyard robot from the side. You can see a narrow chassis with 360 degree rotating tractor tires at both ends. Two frames connect the body to a mirrored, identical part on the opposite side. The device can thereby take a row of vines in the middle and carry out over-the-row work. The robot is about 5m long and 2.2m high with a width of a good 1.5m.

Today we went to a demonstration of a vineyard robot. This is very interesting technology that can do a lot already.

Nevertheless, a robot like this is not really suitable for the usual farming operations in Austria. The high price is not the main concern even. But the necessity of operating the device in closed-off areas, because otherwise someone always has to walk alongside it.

You can tell that the developers have put a lot of thought into the device and also know that in its current form it is only suitable for a few farms with large continuous areas. It feels a bit like the first Teslas. They weren’t practical family cars either, but things have improved a lot in the meantime, and you can probably expect something similar in vineyard robotics.

Nevertheless, the development is highly interesting and it is clear that much more will soon be happening in this field.
